Song Premiere: A. Sinclair’s “All I Wanna Do”

Fans flock to Aaron Sinclair’s music for his sharp riffs and unique phrasing, and his upcoming album, Catpaws, is no exception. We can’t expect to hear this release in its entirety until February 1st, but his new single, “All I Wanna Do,” offers a tempting little taste.

Oozing with a soulful sense of nostalgia, fans of A.Sinclair will appreciate this single right off the bat. There is an simple efficiency in “All I Wanna Do,” that may belie a sort of minimalism. However there is a lot going on in the track. The soft fade-in of drums combined with a jangly guitar shift into a simple, yet haunting call-and-response chorus. The song itself even ends up being a conversation of sorts. “All I wanna do is talk to you” the singer pleads; “you keep running away,” goes the response. The fuzzy, guitar and drum interlude for the bridge offers us a sense of urgency toward the end, before one last pleading “Just let me walk with you.”

A. Sinclair describes their music as ‘rock with roll,’ which is apt, I suppose. Though I can’t help but hear some art-rock notes with a splash of punk mixed into the cocktail. The backing vocals throughout the track and shifty, chameleon-like guitar licks make for a brave combo. Maybe this is what Cake would have sounded like if they spent their career trying rip off The Strokes. Surfy riffs, edgy vocals, and grooving backup singers should make this song an instant hit. It’s got that kind of hook that can really get caught in your ear. By the end of this three-minute track, you’ll be craving more A. Sinclair sound. It’s clear you haven’t heard this stuff before, but at the same time it seems familiar, inviting even. This is because Aaron Sinclair and company know their way around a song.

Maroon 5’s frontman Adam Levine recently bemoaned the current state of rock, stating “Rock music is nowhere really … If it’s around, no one’s invited me to the party.” Apparently Levine has never been to Austin, because the party is here, and it seems A. Sinclair got the invitation just fine. Fans can pre-order a digital download, signed vinyl, and T-shirts by clicking this link here.
